Alexa toolbar
tells you sites' traffic
Click the graphic above. It takes you to a page where you can download the Alexa toolbar. Alexa is very reputable. We've used this toolbar for years and had no problem. It's very safe. Click on the letter "a" on the left and you can easily turn it off (and on again).
You'll find the whole toolbar useful, but what's most useful is that word "Rank" in blue in the middle. Every web site you go to, that number tells you how it "ranks" for traffic. If it says "100" that means that site ranks as 100th for traffic on the entire web. That's huge traffic. The directory bbonline.com ranks about 15,000th. That's still great traffic, about as much as any travel directory you're likely to be approached by. Below 100,000 the ranking gets less accurate but it's still a good guide. Our main guide, nycgetaways.com, usually ranks around 150,000, close to escapemaker.com, another regional directory.
Click on "Rank" and then on "Traffic details" and you get to see much more detail. Here you can "Compare..." one site's traffic with another. Multiply "Reach" by about 2-3000 and you get roughly how many visits the site gets per month. You'll find all kinds of goodies here. You can see graphs for the site's traffic over anything from the past 3 months to 2 years. Pure gold if you're into research.
